One of the biggest mistakes travelers make when choosing an all-inclusive resort is assuming that a beautiful property with impressive amenities must be the right vacation for them.
But here's something I've learned through my travels and years of helping clients plan vacations.
A great resort isn't necessarily the right resort for everyone.
I recently stayed at AVA Resort Cancun while attending a travel industry convention. I enjoyed my experience and rated the resort an 8 to 8.5 out of 10.
Would I return? Absolutely!
But before recommending AVA, I'd want to understand what you're looking for in your vacation.

Who Will Love AVA Resort Cancun?
Families Who Want Plenty of Choices
AVA offers an impressive variety of activities for different ages.
There are family pools, children's water attractions, a kids club for ages 4–11, and a teen lounge for ages 12–17.
You'll also find bowling, escape rooms, laser tag, arcade games, and sports simulators.
I can see this being especially appealing for families with children of different ages.
However, several entertainment activities cost extra.
Travel Smarter Tip: Before booking an all-inclusive resort, ask what's actually included. Additional activities can significantly affect your vacation budget.
Travelers Who Love Dining Variety
If food is an important part of your vacation, AVA deserves consideration.
The resort offers steakhouses, teppanyaki grills, Italian, Mexican, Mediterranean, and casual dining options.
During my visit, I enjoyed the breakfast buffet, smoothies, drinks, and room service.
And yes, I'm still thinking about that delicious margarita pizza!
I didn't experience every restaurant because I was attending a convention, but the food I tried impressed me.
Couples Who Enjoy Relaxation and Activities
Although AVA welcomes families, it also offers adults-only pools, restaurants, and nightlife.
Couples can enjoy quieter spaces while still having access to entertainment and dining.
However, AVA isn't an adults-only resort.
If you're dreaming of a completely adults-only atmosphere, we should explore other options.
Who Might Prefer a Different Resort?
Travelers Who Prefer Smaller Properties
One thing I noticed immediately was AVA's size.
I estimated the property to be approximately a mile long.
Although there are plenty of elevators, you'll still walk considerable distances between some restaurants, pools, and activities.
If you prefer everything close together, this may not be your ideal property.
Travelers Planning Multiple Excursions
AVA is approximately 10–15 minutes from Cancun International Airport, depending on transportation conditions.
That's convenient when arriving or departing.
However, excursions throughout the Riviera Maya may involve longer transportation times.
You may also hear airplanes because of the resort's proximity to the airport.
Your resort location should complement your vacation plans, not complicate them.
Travelers Seeking a Quiet Escape
AVA offers quieter adults-only areas, but it's still a large, active, family-friendly resort.
My room overlooked a lively family pool. Personally, I wasn't bothered by the activities, even when I wanted to rest.
Someone seeking complete tranquility might feel differently.
And that's perfectly okay!
Why This Matters to Your Vacation
Here's something I always encourage travelers to consider.
Are you choosing a resort because it looks impressive, or because it matches how you actually enjoy vacationing?
Those aren't always the same thing.
A family wanting activities and dining variety may love AVA.
A couple seeking an intimate escape might prefer something smaller.
Neither choice is wrong.

That’s just because it’s a family resort and so big.
