First-time passport applicants complete Form DS-11, which can be filled out online and printed before visiting a passport acceptance facility.

Next, you’ll gather a few essential documents, including proof of U.S. citizenship (such as a certified birth certificate) and a valid government-issued photo ID. These documents verify your identity and eligibility for a U.S. passport. 

You’ll also need a passport-compliant photo, which must meet specific requirements for size, background, and facial expression. Many applicants choose to have their photo taken at a post office or professional photo center to ensure it meets official standards. 

Finally, first-time applicants submit their paperwork in person at a passport acceptance facility, such as a post office, county clerk’s office, or participating library. 

Once submitted, your application is processed and your passport is mailed directly to you. 

The key takeaway? The process is manageable—and once it’s done, a world of travel opportunities opens up.

One of the most important travel planning tips I share with clients is simple: apply for your passport well before you plan your trip. 

Many international destinations require your passport to remain valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Waiting until the last minute can create unnecessary stress or even limit your travel options.
